In Dr. Frank Lipman’s book, Revive, he discusses how one of the number one complaints he hears and witnesses is how exhausted we are physically and emotionally. Dr. Mehmet Oz agrees, noting that our busy lifestyles are zapping our energy levels. He has devised a 7-day plan to help beat fatigue.
We especially like these three suggestions:
1. No simple carbs BEFORE noon. We hear a lot about not having a cookie and coffee mid-day to prevent the afternoon slump, but he stresses the importance of not eating simple carbs (cereals, baked goods, sweet coffee drinks) before noon. Instead go for protein-heavy options, including smoothies, eggs or turkey bacon.
2. Hydrate. Exhaustion is often times dehydration in disguise. Try upping your water intake or you can try Dr. Oz’s Wakeup Water recipe:
Make a pitcher each day that contains:
• 8 cups water (to stay hydrated)
• 3/4 cup cooked pearl barley (contains iron to fight fatigue)
• 2 lemons (for antioxidants and vitamin C)
• 1/4 cup honey (to make it palatable and sweet)
To make the beverage: Add barley to boiling water and soak for 10 minutes. Strain and remove barley from the water. Add the juice of 2 lemons and a quarter cup of honey. Try bringing a portable pitcher with you to work. (You can save the cooked barley for dinnertime.) Source: Oprah.com
3. As a yoga teacher, I know the importance of breathing deeply, but even I get caught in tight and restricted breathing patterns when I’m overwhelmed. Take time (ideally at least once an hour) to turn your attention to your breath and work on bringing your breath deep into your abdomen to feel more steady and calm.
