Savor the Silk Road

Ever dreamt of trekking China’s legendary Silk Road, but can’t spare the time away from the office? Silk Road Aromatherapy & Tea Company, located in the historic Chinatown district of Victoria, British Columbia, offers many of the sensory luxuries of its namesake, without the exhausting flight. Owners Daniela Cubelic and Nancy Larose have filled their fragrant shop with exotic teas, unique tea pots, and tea accessories; along with a spa utilizing handmade, 100-percent natural, organic body care products that feature tea as an ingredient.

Silk Road’s Tea Tasting Bar allows guests to sample tea pairings that compare subtle flavors from one region with robust flavors from another. “There are an infinite variety of flavors in the tea realm”, explains Cubelic. “As with grapes and wine, the tea plant reflects the flavor of the region in which it was grown. Tea can be rich and pungent, or delicate and subtle. At the Tea Tasting Bar, you can compare a Chinese black tea to one grown in India, Sri Lanka or Africa, or taste the difference between a selection of green teas all grown in Japan.” Adding to an authentic experience, Chinese teas are served in classic tea bowls, while a Moroccan tea is presented in traditional Moroccan tea ware. Offerings include highly prized Chinese ‘shaped teas’, once reserved exclusively for emperors who enjoyed them both as a delicious beverage, and as part of a meditative experience. These exquisite brews are created by hand-tying tea leaves so that they unfurl into the shape of beautiful flowers as they steep. Both Cubelic and Larose are Tea Masters, and studied with Chinese and Taiwanese Tea Masters to receive their accreditation. They offer a range of workshops and events throughout the year.
