Summer is officially here, and the farmer’s markets are popping up in towns and cites all around. This is great news for your health, because eating locally and seasonally one of the best ways to stay optimally healthy. If you shop at farmer’s markets or even if you are a newbie these 5 tips can help you navigate the market experience:
1. Ask more questions
Most of the time the farmer is selling his/her own goods. This means you can ask questions and get to know them. They sell their own product, which means you can connect with them. Always ask how their produce is grown, is their produce grown organically and sustainably. There are a lot of farmers that will be happy to speak with you. You can even ask if you can visit the farm! Field trip time.
The relationship you start matters. It shows the farmer that people are willing to pay a little more for quality.
2. Skip the middle of the day
Farmer’s Market trips can be very busy and sometimes chaotic. Skip the busy time and go early or arrive later. The same good selection is there if they are products but for produce, if there are seasonal items you want to get, like berries or tomatoes, get to the market early before they sell out.
Farmer’s market shopping is great for people on a budget; you can head to the market in the last hour or so. Most farmers will discount their items, so they don’t have to take them back home.
3. Stock up for the season
Eating seasonally will help you embrace the sweetness of life, but going to the farmer’s market and buying items you can freeze will also make ad difference.
Buying in bulk will usually save you some money. Freeze batches of your favorite foods for a year long good eating.
4. Walk around first
Most farmer’s markets will have repeats of foods, such as a strawberry stand on one side and another on the end. It is a good idea to walk around and see all the selections before you buy. You may miss a great deal plus you won’t have to carry all of your food around which could get hot in the sun.
5. Play
The farmer’s market is more then just a shopping destination. Have fun and play with the world. Take in the energy of the location and have an adventurous time.
Have fun at your local farmer’s market because it can improve your health, says Doc. Feldmanis, a dentist in Eugene OR.
