The fishing industry has a mediocre reputation, and its often hard to know where true sustainable practices are being held in place and where less ethical ones are taking over. In addition, numerous fish species now contain significant contaminants including PCBs and mercury, both harmful to your health. Not sure which fish to skip?
Here are 11 fishy fish you should avoid.
1. Atlantic Cod: Atlantic Cod species are in steep decline. Instead, look for Pacific Cod.
2. American Eel: Often found in sushi, this one is contaminated with PCBs and mercury. Instead look for Atlantic or Pacific-caught squid.
3. Caviar: Caviar from Beluga and wild-caught sturgeon is often overfished. Caviar comes from larger fish as well, which means it needs a longer time to grow and rebound from poor fishing practices.
4. Imported shrimp: Evidently, this is one of the dirtiest of the fish out there. Heavy use of antibiotics and chemicals make this one a must-skip.
5. Atlantic Flatfish: This includes halibut, sole, and flounder. These fish, unfortunately are overfished.
6. Atlantic Salmon: These fish stocks are low and have been for quite some time. Unfortunately, farmed Atlantic salmon isn’t any better as it pollutes the waters. Look for Wild Alaskan Salmon instead.
7. Imported King Crab: Imported crab typically comes from areas where it is over-harvested. Instead look for Alaskan Crab.
8. Shark: Hopefully this one isn’t on your list already. But shark species contain significant mercury (due to their larger size).
9. Orange Roughy: This fish is currently overfished and also contains high levels of mercury.
10. Atlantic Bluefin Tuna: This type of tuna evidently contains more mercury than any other type of tuna, and tuna tends to have high mercury. In addition, bluefin tuna are overharvested and are currently listed as “critically endangered”.
11. Chilean Sea Bass: This fish is one of the most severely endangered; Greenpeace has said that if the practices don’t change the species could be wiped out in 5 years.
