Those who want the scent of maple…

Those who want the scent of maple as well as its curative properties have fewer choices. B. Kamins adds maple fragrance back into its hunger-provoking Sugar Body Scrub and Maple Body Lotion. Two new products from Jaqua; Maple Syrup Hydrating Shower Syrup with Maple Extract and Maple Sugar Exfoliating Body Polish with Maple Extract; really pour it on, managing to smell buttery as well as sweet. Jaqua also tapped maple for its bed-and-breakfast-themed collection, The Ivy Cottage Inn. “Since we were young, maple syrup has been a weekend indulgence for us, with butter and waffles” says Jennifer Jaqua, president and founder of her namesake company with her sister Sara. “When Sara and I stayed at the Parsonage Inn in Oxford, England, we had the most amazing maple syrup and waffles. That magical breakfast was one of the inspirations for our B&B collection”

Spring is an ideal time to celebrate the season of sap while shedding winter skin with a maple-based body scrub, capitalizing on AHAs and the granular quality of maple sugar. While maple’s on the menu at spas across the country, spas in the Northeast and Canada naturally tap into this local specialty. In the Muskoka resort area of Ontario, Angel’s Spa & Wellness Center at Delta Sherwood Inn uses homegrown Canadian maple products for its signature Muskoka Maple Sugar Scrub, a full-body granular exfoliation followed by moisturizing application of maple body lotion. The Muskoka Maple Syrup Wrap includes a Shirobyhanga scalp massage and pressure-point facial while you’re under wraps, as well as a slathering of maple body oil and a post-exfoliation anointment of warm maple syrup. Local trees also supply the raw ingredients for Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa’s signature Adirondack Maple Sugar Body Scrub in Lake Placid, New York, and for the Maple Sugar Body Scrub at Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa in Whitefield, New Hampshire.

Those certain that the best maple syrup comes from Vermont head to Topnotch Resort & Spa in Stowe where the Maple Sugar Body Scrub features an exfoliation using Vermont maple sugar under warm running water followed by a loofah wash with maple, vitamin E, and cornmeal soap that is locally produced expressly for the spa. Margo Loeffler, assistant supervisor of massage staff, explains the maple treatment is more moisturizing and gentle than their salt scrub: “Maple is a humectant, so it keeps moisture in the skin. As opposed to feeling fresh and pink from the salt scrub, you feel velvety. We find afterward, we don’t need a moisturizer” Maple is one scrub flavor served by Avanyu Spa at The Equinox in Manchester Village, Vermont, in its Gentle Rain body treatment. For the full maple experience, go during the 5th Annual Vermont Maple Open House Weekend, March 24-26, when sugarhouses throughout the state welcome visitors who want to watch and learn about the transformation of sap to syrup to sugar, a tasty Spring getaway.

At Home Spa Recipe

Maple Facial Scrub

Recipe courtesy of the Jaqua sisters

Ingredients

1 tbs. milk

1 tbs. pure maple syrup (Do not use artificially flavored syrup!)

3 tbs. finely powdered oats

2 drops lemon essential oil

1 drop sweet orange essential oil

Preparation

1. Warm the milk in a microwave. Do not burn or boil it, just warm it lightly for about 15 seconds.

2. Combine the maple syrup and milk and stir well to dissolve syrup. Add oats and stir. Let sit for 5 minutes.

3. Add essential oils and stir again to ensure they mix.

4. To use, secure hair away from face; wet face. Scoop facial scrub into palms. Apply to face and neck using upward, sweeping motions, and gentle, circular motions. Repeat if desired (or just because you like the way it feels and smells!) Rinse well and follow with toner and moisturizer.

Store it in a tightly closed container in the refrigerator for as long as you would safely store milk in the refrigerator. Check the ‘use by’ date on the milk carton you use for an idea of how long it will remain fresh in the refrigerator.
