A leading dentist opens up about what he wishes his patients would do.
Many people tend to think that the mouth is separate from the rest of the body. They don’t consider it in their overall health, the mouth seems isolated from the rest of your body but the mouth affects everything and your body can affect your mouth, particularly when it comes to health issues like diabetes, obesity, gum disease and oral cancers.
We decided to interview Dr. Andrew Thompson, a Dentist in Banks, OR at TenderCare Dental to help provide insight into your health.
How often do you personally replace your toothbrush?
I practice good healthy habits, but I am human so I don’t always replace my brush as often as I should. I do brush my teeth gently and properly to ensure removal of bacteria build up.
I tell patients to replace their toothbrush every 3 months because the tips of the bristles become blunted with daily use. A new brush has bristles with rounded ends, which will always minimizes damage to the teeth and gum. If your toothbrush bristles are flaring out, you may be brushing too hard.
What’s the biggest misconception about dentists?
Some people fear us and think we are in business to hurt them. This is just isn’t the reality. In fact some people assume dentists only focus on teeth, but we can find many more serious issues in the mouth.
Some people think we find problems that don’t really exist just to make money. I think it is hard to tell someone they have a mouth full of cavities, but we are there to help: We don’t enjoy telling patients they have a problem.
What advice would you give people to improve their teeth today?
Brush and floss your teeth daily. It is the best way to prevent problems in your mouth.
