“I’m not in the mood,” “I’m tired,” “I don’t want to have to shower after,” “I’m too busy” How many excuses do you have to not work out?
The thing about excuses is that, what may start as a quickly conjured idea as to why you can’t is cemented in your brain as you convince yourself of the fact that you definitely cannot work out because of… Excuses are an instant motivation killer. And, as you know, motivation, or rather lack thereof, is one of the most powerful obstacles to getting in shape.
Need a counter-excuse? Here are 5 excuses and 5 solutions to override that excuse.
- EXCUSE: No time.
NO EXCUSE: Schedule it. Make time, don’t ‘find’ time.
- EXCUSE: I can’t afford it.
NO EXCUSE: Exercise doesn’t have to cost much, or anything at all! Get outside and walk/jog/run/bike/hike/play basketball! Do a workout DVD in your living room. “Play” a fitness video game. Do a Quickie Workout in Bed. Just sweat!
- EXCUSE: But I want to hang out with my friends.
NO EXCUSE: Include them! Forget happy hour. Exercise can be your social hour!
- EXCUSE: I have no idea what I’m doing.
NO EXCUSE: No one does at first. The point is to move. Even if you’re just marching in place, flailing around, skipping, doing jumping jacks… think back to PE class in school. What did you do to work out back then? Relay races, running around a track, boot camp style exercises. MOVE!
- EXCUSE: I don’t have the right shoes.
NO EXCUSE: You don’t need shoes to do a Quickie Workout in Bed. You wear stilettos when you go to a club and sweat (yes, that’s a workout too). Beach volleyball doesn’t require shoes. Push-ups, sit-ups, seated dips, plank, etc no shoes required for those either.
