Most of us want to find happiness right?
Feeling happier is easier than we think—we just have to shift our habits and focus. In my book Adventures for Your Soul, I share that the key to happiness is, in part, identifying the habits that are not serving you and replacing them with healthier ones. When you focus on what you want instead of what you don’t want, it is easier to make your goals come true.
At the start of each year, it is a good opportunity to shift focus and remove what no longer works for us. We can put more attention on our goals in hope of becoming a better version of ourselves.
If you want to make the next year your best one yet, consider focusing on making priorities. Instead of creating lofty goals that remain on your resolution list year after year, create a priority list.
Here are 7 things to prioritize and get you started:
1. Prioritize your self-care
Prioritizing your own self-care will send a message to yourself that you matter. When we break promises with ourselves, such as “I will go to the gym today” and then skip it or “I will eat extra healthy this week” and then don’t, we send the subtle message that promises to ourselves aren’t worth keeping. We then believe we aren’t worthy. Reverse this and retrain yourself to prioritize you. This could be as simple as booking the spa trip you keep dreaming about. Keeping promises to yourself will help.
2. Prioritize your work-life balance
Are you overworked and under-joyed? Chances are, you are working too hard. In the new year, focus on more play and let that be your strategy for abundance and joy. The more balance we have in our life between recreation and fun and work, the more successful we can be.
3. Prioritize your feelings
You may feel uncomfortable because you are harboring emotions and feelings that want to be expressed. In the new year, make it a point to say what you need to say and share what you are feeling. It is not an act of weakness to be vulnerable—it is a sign of strength. Plus it releases the emotions from your body so you can be lighter and more balanced.
4. Prioritize paying off credit card debt
If you worry about financial woes, address the debt you can manage. Pick your credit card with the highest interest rate and make a plan of attack to pay it off. There are tons of resources to help you prioritize your financial situation, such as a consolidation loan or switching to a no-interest card. No matter what, stop ignoring your debt and make a plan to pay it off. Your future self will thank you.
5. Prioritize your health
Take care of your body. Your body is the vehicle that gets you around. This year pay extra close attention to its needs. Give it care and move it daily. Exercise is a key component to happiness and health. Eliminating foods that make you feel sluggish and drained is important. Treat your body with respect and prioritize your health in the new year.
6. Prioritize your positive thoughts
Instead of focusing on negative thoughts or what is not working, make it a habit to turn your attention to what is good. You can train your brain to see the good in almost anything. Take time to cultivate this power by choosing positive thoughts.
7. Prioritize your joy
Instead of doing what you have to do or what you think you need to do, focus on what brings you joy. Follow your joy route and prioritize your happiness as if your life depends on it, because in a way, it does.
What are you going to prioritize in the new year? I would love to hear from you in the comments.
