Eating With The SeasonsEating With The Seasons

We live in a society that wants tomatoes 365 days a year.

No matter where they have to come from, our culture needs seedless grapes, red bell peppers, and celery every day of the year.

But seriously, can you honestly say you had a good tomato in the middle of January? Much of what we are tasting in fruits and vegetables is the nutrition in it.

For myself and my family, we strive to lean towards the foods that are available locally and seasonally, but at the same time we try not to be too strict about it. My son loves getting a fruity treat when we do our shopping at the store, which includes strawberries, apples, blueberries. We love eating with the seasons and look forward to foods being available locally or in our garden all year round.

Imagine the seasons as cycles that our bodies go through roots in the winter can warm you up, young tender greens and shoots in the spring to awaken your body, juicy fruits and vegetables in the summer to cool you off, and feasting in the fall to prepare your body for another winter.

Many foods that are harvested for shipping all over the world are intentionally picked under ripe and sometimes sprayed with chemicals to maintain their freshness. I have heard that apples can be kept in a temperature controlled room and be in selling condition for up to a year. I prefer my food to be much fresher than that personally!

A note on Food Security I feel so fortunate that my family and I can grow a major portion of our food and source the rest (nearly) within 20 miles of our house. During the Hurricane that came to the east coast in last fall, I had friends who lived in locations where the stores started running out of food. The trucks couldn’t get through certain highways and food deliveries were majorly delayed in many places. I am really thankful for where I live and that local food is so prevalent and easy to find.

With the summer season coming up (and for some of you it’s already here!) why not try out just eating locally/seasonally for 1 week? It’s easy to do this time of year and quite enjoyable!
