Stress Tips from the Experts

Sometimes you can feel negative vibes even before an energy vampire sucks the spirit out of you. We all encounter them in our lives, people whose mere presence can be a downer. Setting boundaries or just saying no doesn’t work if the vampire is a family member or coworker, but you can hone your energy intuition and stress management skills to minimize the bite.

Judith Orloff, M.D., board-certified psychiatrist, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, and healing intuitive, understands how stress-inducing that feeling can be. From childhood she was sensitive and empathetic to the energy of the people around her, whether they intended to have an effect on her or not. To survive the emotional toll, she developed strategies to maintain balance, which she shares in her latest book, Positive Energy: 10 Extraordinary Prescriptions for Transforming Fatigue, Stress & Fear into Vibrance, Strength & Love (Harmony, 2004).

“When I feel trapped, I imagine a shield of white light around me”, says Orloff. “This protective cocoon allows positive energy in but won’t let negativity enter. It’s an invisibility cloak, not to numb or shut down, but to keep negative energy from disabling me.” This works well in situations where you can’t walk away, like when you are next to a blamer or criticizer at dinner or at a social or work event where someone just won’t stop gossiping or hogging the conversation.

‘Energy Psychiatry’ is a phrase Orloff coined to unite traditional approaches with the roles of subtle energies, spirituality, and intuition in healing. Her passion is training professionals to improve health care with this awareness, and Positive Energy shows you how to do it yourself.
