Give These Foods The ‘Yay’ or ‘Nay’ at Your Favorite Café

0

Coffee shops, teashops and cafes are popping up all over the world.

But we often find ourselves at spa cafes looking at all the tasty treats. With so many new spas opening cafes, it is important to know what to get in order to stay healthy. There are wonderful baked goods, fresh fruit and tasty treats but if you aren’t careful you could blow you healthy diet in one sitting.

Here are the best things to eat and avoid at cafes.

YAY TO THESE GOODIES

  • Go Nuts for Nuts

There is a lot of cafés that stock up on nuts, which you can purchase at checkout. They are crunchy, salty and satisfying—plus they are full of good-for-you fats. Eat a serving of almonds, nuts or cashews for instant energy that will stay with you all afternoon.

  • Energize with Bars

Energy bars can be a healthy alternative to sugar filled pastries, but read the ingredients. Some are full of sugar and can do more damage than good.

  • Chai Tea

Some chai’s have tons of sugar in them. We suggest chai tea, not a chai latter. Skip the sugar. The chair in a box is often premixed and packed with sugar. “The sugar can damage on your teeth.  Chair tea has many health benefits but mixing it with mild and sugar can cause more damage to your teeth and health,” says Dr. Roane.

Don’t forget that beverages count as snacks, too! It is best to choose a small or medium size.

  • Oatmeal or Greek Yogurt

Eating oatmeal in the morning can help regulate your blood sugar and balance out your mood. Skip the brown sugar and avoid the dried fruit. “The fruit has a lot of sugar and can damage your teeth,” says Dr. Bos.

Even thought dried fruit is natural, it has high sugar content. Instead reach for fresh berries instead!

NAY TO THESE

  • Muffins, Pastries

To many muffins can give you a muffin top. It is best to avoid flour-based pastries at coffee shops. Most are loaded with butter, fat and sugar which makes eating one more then your daily recommended amount of calories.

  • Yogurt Parfaits

These little treats may seem healthy, but our experts tell us they are drenched in sugar. This makes them high in fat and calories. You are better going for fresh berries or yogurt with out all the extra toppings.

  • Sugar Filled drinks

Stay healthy and untrack with smart choices. Pumpkin spice lattes, caramel flan = major crash later. Avoid these with all your might. Instead get tea of a rip espresso. This will give you a natural health boost with out all the sugar and calories.
