Brushing and flossing your teeth everyday is a great way to take care of your smile. But where you store your toothbrush may make a difference in how clean your teeth are really getting. Here are the worst places to store your toothbrush.
By the toilet
Many people store their toothbrush in a cup on the sink, but if your sink counter is close to your toilet than watch out for bad bacteria. The place around your toilet is isolated with germs and bacteria. Leaving a toothbrush anywhere out in the open is bad news for your brush.
Poo particles and bacteria build up can leak into the air, which will find its way onto your toothbrush. And then into your mouth. YUCK!
Close to young children
Many new parents don’t think about putting their toothbrush out of the reach of young children. This is understandable because new parents are busy learning how to be a parent, but making sure the toothbrush is out of reach will save a lot of energy and time. Young children are curious and will reach for anything. A toothbrush could go into their mouth and choke them.
Next to the sink and disposal
Sinks carry a lot of germs and bacteria. When you run the water down the drain, the particles circle in the air. They could find there way onto your toothbrush if you aren’t carful.
The best place to put a toothbrush is in a cool dry place, like a medicine cabinet. People who brush everyday will see an improvement in their oral health, especially if they put their toothbrush in a covered area. Sometimes dentist will recommend putting the toothbrush in a drawer.
The most important thing to remember is that storing your toothbrush in a place that is away from germs, and free radicals floating in the air will help you be more healthy says Dr. Derek Conklin, a dentist in Portland.
