We’ve covered tea, but there are two other beverages you should be adding to your arsenal.
Wine: Red wine is rich in phytochemical compounds called polyphenols. Two polyphenols, catechins and resveratrol are thought, according to studies, to have antioxidant and anticarcinogenic properties. Resveratrol has been shown to reduce tumor incidence. However, some studies have also shown too much alcohol can increase cancer risk, namely breast cancer. The recommendation? Keep it to one glass a day this, for instance, can help cut a man’s risk of prostate cancer in half. It can also help prevent Alzheimer’s, as well as your likelihood of a heart attack or stroke.
**Not a fan of wine, or do you get headaches from the tannins in red? Look for an alcohol-free variety (Whole Foods carries this in some states), or look for a resveratrol supplement.
Coffee: For years coffee was the black sheep of the drinking department, second only to soda. But it appears that the previous research was littered with factors, including smoking and physical inactivity. Recent research shows that coffee may decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes, liver cancer, and even Parkinson’s disease. Heavy use, can cause health problems, however, so stick to one or two cups a day.
** Not a fan of coffee? Most studies have only demonstrated health benefits from the caffeinated variety. And researchers are quick to warn that you shouldn’t start drinking coffee just to reap health benefits. Instead, turn to tea.
