The woman at the front desk wearing a sky blue Hawaiian print shirt greeted me with a soft grin. I know immediately that I have arrived in one of the unique pockets of Hawaii, where authentic is the pulse.
A little over an hour’s drive from the bustle of Honolulu, the North Shore drums to a different beat. National Geographic has called the North Shore of Oahu, “one of the wonders of the world – one of Earth’s most awesome places” and I can now see why.
Here, locals live in concert with the tides and wind patterns of the weather. Winter brings the world’s most celebrated and elite surfers to town, along with their loyal global following. Oahu’s fabled North Shore is home to the largest big wave surfing in the world and the lust for big waves and big living fills the air.
The energy of water gods permeates the property of Turtle Bay Resort, where surf stars often turn up. Surfer The Bar is one such hot spot where pro surfers, celebrities and North Shore icons pop in for good eats and conversation.
I made my way to the back to the main resort for my spa appointments at the Nalu Kinetic Spa. I’d been in Hawaii for a few months by this time, and it was time to get my skin in top shape for the summer. I tried the Sea of Life Facial, which promised to hydrate my dry sun-kissed face.
The spa uses organic marine-based minerals that are derived from the sea. My estheticians analyzed my skin and whipped up selections for the overall health and vitality of my skin. After 60 minutes, my face as glowing from the deep pore cleansing treatment which purified my skin.
I stepped into an outdoor garden treatment room to prepare for my next experience the Custom Massage. I could hear the ocean waves folding into the earth, and the tropical birds whispering in the outside garden. This full-body massage was customized to fit my needs. My therapist asked what I was looking for in my treatment, and where to focus his attention to relieve the tension.
As we got started he used multiple techniques, combining deep tissue, and some Lomi Lomi, along with trigger point therapy and connective tissue release to effectively relieve my tensions and ease some of my chronic work stress pain. This service was perfectly suited to the outdoor garden view room.
After my treatments I was zenned out and blissed to the max. Even still I wantd to check out the Nalu Kinetic Spa Fitness Center. The expanded spa includes a movement studio for Zumba, Hot Hula and yoga. I was in awe at the gorgeous space with its floor-to-ceiling windows that framed the unique coastline view; and it is furnished with state-of-the-art cardio, strength and functional training equipment. Turtle Bay is recognized for its dedication to health and wellness, and the extensive list of classes is not shy. Guests can choose from 3-4 different types of wellness classes a day. Zumba, Wet Sweat, Dance Fit, Stand Up Paddle-Boarding (SUP), and a wide range of yoga classes to inspire any active traveler.
I considered trying my luck at surfing, (board rentals and lessons are available on the property), but first decided to check out the 12 miles of ocean front hiking trails. It felt so refreshing to trek along the clean, maintained trails. I felt safe and eager to keep going as I passed the famous banyan tree where “Lost,” and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” were filmed. Out on these paths I had an opportunity to connect with myself and savor the moment of true tranquility I was experiencing. I was blessed to hear the tropical birds singing sweetly, and I hiked alongside the Ironwood trees and heard the roar of crashing surf and swaying palm trees. Exploring the beautiful paths at Turtle Bay Resort lets everyone experience Hawaii’s beauty and some well-deserved moments of peace and tranquility.
